366 JOURNAL OF THE SENATE. EVENING SESSION. The Senate met pursuant to adjournment. The President laid before tlte Senate the following communication: j City of Jefferson, Feb. 27, 1849. To the honorable the Senatct Gentlemen: I hereby tender to you the resignation of the office of representative of the 3d senatorial district of this State. Other engagements, incompatible with my duties here, render this course necessary. In taking leave of the Senate, allow me to express the high,respect and esteem which I entertain towards its members and officers, and the regret with which I leave them. I trust that your future labors may be characterized by that good feeling and harmony which has heretofore prevailed, and that all your action may tend to promote the welfare of our country. I am, gentlemen, Your obedient servant, CARTY WELLS. Mr. Woolfolk asked and obtained leave to reeord his vote in the affirmative on the several propositions to amend the constitution passed by the Senate during the morning session. The Senate resumed the consideration of the question pending at the time of adjournment. * Mr. Jones of Newton, moved the previous question; And the question being: "Shall the main question be now put?" Was decided in the negative by the following vote: AYES—Messrs. Abernathy, Edwards, Flournoy, Hancock, Hudspeth, Jackson, Jonesof Newton, Lowe, Nickel, Norris, Owens, Price, Priest, Williams, Woolfolk, and Wyatt—16. NOES—Messrs. Bean, Burnes, Campbell, Ellison, Gatewood, Jones of Cooper, Jones of Franklin, Long, Polk, Reed, Stewart, and White —12. Absent—Messrs. Burtis, and Leslie. On leave—Mr. Chiles. Sick—Mr. Rollins.
