This Regiment, as it now stands upon the rolls, was formed by a consolidation of the Fremont Hussars and the Benton Hussars, two Battalions of six companies each, organized by authority of General Fremont, in the fall of 1861. This consolidation was effected in November, 1862, under orders from Headquarters. The 1st Western Cavalry, Fremont Hussars, was organized at the Abbey Track, in St. Louis, and when General Fremont set out for the West with his forces in September, 1861 six companies accompanied the expedition. Two other companies were left at the camp, and afterwards were detached and incorporated into the 5th Iowa Cavalry, having been re- cruited in Iowa, and the 9th and 10th Companies, partly formed, were broken up. The six companies, under command of Major Waring. were with General Fremont in the Springfield Campaign, and after the removal of that Commander, returned with Asboth's Division, in November, to Rolla. In January, 1862, they again st out with the Army of the Southwest, under General Curtis, for Springfield. The 5th and 6th Companies were left at Lebanon, Missouri, as part of the Post garrison, and afterwards joined the army at West Plains in the march to Batesville, in April, 1862. In the month of January, 1862, Wood's Battalion of Missouri Cavalry were consoli- dated with the Fremont Hussars, under the name of the 4th Missouri Cavalry, and Major Waring was commissioned Colonel of the Regiment. This organization continued only one month, when the component portions of the new Regiment, found too dissimilar, were dissolved by the removal of the Wood's Battalion, and the addition of three companies of the Hol- land Horse, a United States Reserve Corps Cavalry Battalion. The first four companies of the 4th Missouri Cavalry were with the army of the South- west, throughout all the Pea Ridge Campaign, and afterwards, being joined at West Plains by the other two left at Lebanon, were through the Little Red and White River Campaigns, and came out at Helena in July, 1862. Remaining with the army at Helena all summer, the 4th Missouri Cavalry came up with the Division of Osterhaus in Southeast Missouri and in November, the Holland Horse Companies were mustered out, and the Benton Hussars Bat- talion joined, and thus the Regiment is found at present. The4th Missouri Cavalry were under General Davidson in Southeast Missouri all the fall and winter of 1862 and 1863, and were a part of the expedition to Batesville, made during that time. During the spring of 1863, the Regiment was ordered to General Rose- rans in Tennessee, but reporting en route to General Asboth, was detained at Columbus by r--23
