43 "Four Companies to be attached and one Company to be distributed among the Seventh Cavalry, M. S. M. "2d. The Fifth Regiment of Cavalry, M. S. M., is hereby broken up, and the (10) Companies belonging to the same, will be attached and distributed as follows: "Three Companies to be attached and two Companies to be distributed among the First Cavalry, M. S. M. "Four Companies to be attached and one Company to be distributed among the Ninth Cavalry, M. S. M. "3d. The Twelfth Regiment of Cavalry, M. S. M., is hereby broken up, and the (8) Companies belonging to the same will be attached and distributed as follows: "Three Companies to be attached to the Tenth Cavalry, M S. M. "Three Companies to be attached and two Companies to be distributed among the Thir- teenth Cavalry, M. S. M. "4th. The Fourteenth Regiment of Cavalry, M. S. M., is hereby broken up, and the (8) Companies belonging to the same will be attached and distributed as follows "Two Companies to be attached and two Companies to be distributed among the Fourth Cavalry, M. S. M. "Two Companies to be attached and two Companies to be distributed among the Eighth Cavalry, M. S. M. "5th. Captain Milton Burris, Commanding Company 'I,' (Infantry,) heretofore at- tached to the First Cavalry, M. S. M., will report in person, with his command, to Colonel John B. Gray, Commanding the First Infantry, M. S. M, at Pilot Knob, Mo. "6th. The Company of Cavalry, M. S. M., known as the 'Schofield Hussars,' com- manded by Captain Napoleon Westerberg, is hereby attached to the Thirteenth Regiment of Cavalry, M. S. M., as Company 'I,' and Captain Westerberg, will report, without delay, to Colonel Albert Sigel, Commanding said Regiment, at Waynesville, for duty. "II.... Special Orders will hereafter be issued from these Headquarters, designating the particular companies which are to be attached, and those which will be broken up, and the men distributed among the regiments indicated above. "III ....All officers made supernumerary by these orders of consolidation, will be mus- tered out of service, to take effect from the date of the actual breaking up of the commands to which they respectively belong, excepting those who may be appointed to vacancies in the consolidated regiments. All Government property in possession of such officers will be turned over by them to the nearest United States Post Quartermasters. "IV .... The Regiments heretofore designated as the Tenth and Thirteenth Cavalry, M. S. M., will hereafter be known, respectively, as the Third and Fifth Regiments of Cavalry, M. S. M. "By order of the Commander-in-Chief: WILLIAM D, WOOD, Acting Adjutant General. " The Fifth Regiment, Colonel Penick, was subsequently mustered out of service, as was also the remainder of the Second Battalion; thus the force was reduced to the limit mentioned above. In consequence of the withdrawal from the State of large numbers of United States Volunteers, this force now was necessarily scattered more than ever; the majority of it, however, was operating in the most threat- ened part of the State, viz: the Southwest. After the battle of Prairie Grove, and the defeat of the rebel forces in that engagement, a portion of theregiments in that locality were withdrawn to the central portion of the State, where they have since been mostly stationed, being distributed so that nearly every county has one or more companies within its limits. In a subsequent part of this report, I will present the present actual strength of this force. It can be said with truth, that in every instance where the Missouri State Militia have met the enemy, they have fought like veterans. At no time have they disgraced their State, and whenever they have been called upon to go beyond its borders, they have done so readily and eagerly, more especially if the prospect of a fight was immediate; as for example, one instance may be noted, when the Sixth Cavalry, Missouri State Militia, Colonel Catherwood commanding, with a portion of the Eighth, during the past summer, marched to Fort Gibson, to join General Blunt, and crossing the Arkansas river, pursued the rebels to Red River, Arkan-
