Carving Caring out outu a living She follows fathers father's f footsteps footstep By Jane Bosveld staff writer Terry Denton grew up in a secluded mountain home In the Arkansas Ozarks Her father made his living carving wood and at age ten Terry took up the trade Now 23 Terry is considered to be one of the outstanding woodcarvers in the Ozarks Terry and her father Ivan Denton work at atone atone atone one of the best woodcarving havens in the Ozarks the Wilderness Road Clockworks Shop in Reeds Spring Missouri Their work along with work of other carvers at Clock Clock- Clockworks Clockworks works is highly acclaimed They are also among the Ozark natives written about in the National Geographic book American Mountain People Bruce BruceDale BruceDale BruceDale Dale photographer for the book was honored as magazine photographer of the year at the University's Journalism Week Most of Terrys Terry's carvings are French Renaissance women with flowing gowns and delicate features Some of them have sold for over a hundred dollars One e of the things that makes Terrys Terry's carvings special is their size The great bulk of 0 her work is classified class as miniature a size most woodcarvers find f too difficult d to handle The detail she gives her carvings make them exceptional pieces of 0 art Terry says that to produce such intricate carvings You have to have a mind like a steel trap You need intense con con- concentration concentration concentration and relaxation Youve You've got to empty your mind of everything and con con- concentrate concentrate concentrate on what youre you're doing Relaxed concentration is a state of mind many people find hard to maintain Terry admits she sometimes gets nervous while carving I put pot myself under a tight schedule Because of that I sometimes get nervous and cut myself She holds up a bandaged finger to illustrate her point This slip cut to the bone she explains When Terry first started carving she was embarrassed about her work For a long time my work was Vas really bad Id I'd carve when Daddy wasn't around because hed he'd look over my carving and criticize it He always constructively but I always was much too afraid of his opinion q Now we have a great deal of respect for each others other's work We both have a good relationship with the wood The Clockworks Shop in Reeds Spring houses several time full woodcarvers Their work seems to be well wen received One area resident said The Clockworks Ship is one OM of the most interesting places in the Ozarks One woodcarver stayed up all aU night working on the face of a life size American Indian Some of us are are highly nocturnal Terry remarked d. d A few of the Clockworks residents carve without a model Terry says she doesn't like to do that I can visualize easily but I dont don't like to start something ng without drawing a design first I might change my mind and then have to start all over Some of Terrys Terry's patterns are so popular that she makes copies of them over and over And some of her carvings as she puts it happen in a hurry Others take hours of hard work to design and more hours to carve Terry hopes one day to travel to Europe to study at a woodcarving school in Swit SWit- been carving for far hundreds of years over there she says For now though she seems content car car- carving carving carving ving at Clockworks Woodcarving in today's highly technological society may be one ore of the last frontiers for automation Indeed there are already machines that mass produce car car- carvings carvings carvings and yet Terry Denton and the other Clockworks carvers dont don't seem too worried carve They'll-carve no matter what As Terry says carvings my whole life
