Tragedy Mars Scout Canoe Trip Trig YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Wyo UPI Kim Jones 16 16 churned for an hour hourin hourin in icy Yellowstone Lake urging a companion on Explorer Scout to toJ keep J ep up with him in their struggle to reach shore share But Bob Safran 16 grew tired and desperate He said Buddy dont don't leave me and I said I wont won't Then I reached back to help him and he be was gone and that was the last I ever saw of af him II Jones said Friday in describing a wilderness w ordeal in which he ran 17 miles barefoot through bear country to get help for his companions dying in the swept storm lake The teen-agers teen were warn mem mem- members members bers hers of a Scout group which set setout setout setout out Wednesday to paddle peddle across oss the lake in canoes and kayaks They were in the middle of the t lake when a storm struck Four of the nine nine all all from Albuquerque que NM drowned We Wead had just gotten to the middle of the lake and it just hit like a bomb bob Jones said I didn't know it at the time but the storm scattered us over allover aU the lake We started taking on water At first I was really reaDy scared Bob and ami I swam about a half half- mile mite together and then he be started really turning purple Jones kept swimming Every time I would stop moving my arms in the water they would freeze up he said saidI saidI saidI I figured old buddy you'd better keep moving because if you dont don't youre you're dead I remember crawling up on the shore re and giving thanks to God to be alive I was hurting pretty bad but I 1 ran most of the 17 miles males to the ranger station Jones was barefooted and in inthe inthe inthe the midst of bear country Some of lees his trek was made in darkness and he pe e startled one bear who gave chase This bear came up and slapped the bottom of the tree with his paw and darned near knocked me out of d it said Jones who woo sat on a tree limb for an hour and the bear grew weary and wandered away aw y The teen teen-ager reached a ranger station at noon Thurs burs day Rangers returned to the lake and picked up four scouts who made it safely to shore sh e. e Drowned were Safran Burris Burns 26 Tom Gower 16 16 and Darwin Seamons Seamona in his mid Of those who woo struggled in the water only Jones survived Park rangers estimated a person could stay alive only 30 minutes in the cold lake water But Jones was in the water for far about 90 minutes All of the scouts and their leaders were wearing life jackets and the bodies of Seamons Gower and Safran were found floating with their jackets strapped around them Rangers searched for fee fers fer's body Paul Porter 17 Kevin Seamons amons 16 16 Russ Hallett 14 H and Ken Foley 15 15 survived in addition to Jones They were taken to the lake hospital for treatment and released Jones Jo s was treated for fer cuts on en his feet and legs and a severe sunburn Doctors said he would be confined to fA a wheelchair for fOl fora a few days
