Kimel Kline Advises Engineers To Help Educate Public By Larry larTy Buser Baser Missourian Staff Writer The University College O of cl Engineering dean said Friday night that engineers and scientists must lead a public education campaign if the problems of the technology- technology environment dilemma are to be solved Speaking at the t College of Engineering's annual honor societies banquet in the Memorial Union Dean W. W R. R Kimel said that in the past technologists have paid no attention to the origins of public attitudes Young minds willing to learn leam have been ignored Kimel said These may be tomorrows tomorrow's dissenters and hostile voters Advances in technology are not seen as unmitigated good by society Approximately 50 students were inducted as members of three professional engineering Tau Beta Pi Pi Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering E and Eta Kappa Nu Electrical Engineering Kimel said environmental problems can be solved only with the cooperation of rl all members of society The survival and quality of human life requires that all aU disciplines discuss the problems he be continued We must give spiritual and aesthetic needs much more than just Up lip service Each advance must be carefully scrutinized for its impact on the environment before not after it itis itis itis is put into use In addition to air pollution poU ution Kimel said oil oU spills strip mining and the depletion of fossil fuels present the most pressing environmental problems We have an increased energy demand diminishing fuel resources and rampant pollution he said However the cost of o corrective measures is very great We need a coordinated plan of action for what we would like to see not in one year but in 50 years or years Kimel said fuel costs at the University have doubled this year and said finding more fuel resources will require mammoth engineering ef ef- effort ef- ef fort He added the most suitable solution to the energy crisis is to develop elop the use of nuclear power Coal has been mined for fot over years yet et more than half of the total has been mined min in the last 34 years he said The only adequate solution is nuclear power because it is a completely contained product There is not a lack of knowledge but a lack of im implementation kin kin- by technological people By the year 2000 Kimel said 50 per cent of all aU power will be nuclear He added that neither political leaders nor business and industrial leaders will in induce in- in induce induce duce changes in the en en- Engineers and scientists must provide the stimulus with their special skills and social consciences he noted We must lead mankind out of the pollution quicksand to dean clean cl an and efficient energy for all aU
