Retail Food Prices Declined in October WASHINGTON UPI The government reported Wednesday that tl retail food prices dropped slightly in October led ted by declines in fresh fruits and frying chickens and helped along by decreases ases in bread and arsi beef beer prices Agriculture Department Oe 2 economists said the over overall cost of a typical food basket fell 02 per cent last month bringing the annual rate of costs far fer cr produced farm food to 1317 or oi 3 13 below the annual amual rate for September The total market basket baet cost was the lowest since June but was 58 52 per cent above a year ago Most of ci the over-all over decline the report said came from lower tower prices for fresh fruits and frying chickens But it said bread bre- prices slid to the lowest point since see last January despite higher higner wheat wh at prices which have led bakers to seek relief from federal price controls The report said beef prices dropped even though retail food chains and meat packers who had narrowed their profit margins in September widened them again in October to erode most of the potential October retail price declines The Agriculture Department report noted its 02 per r cent figure contrasted with a Labor Department report showing no change in retail food prices in October The difference it said was that the Labor tabor Department report rort included non farm foods like fish which were not covered by the Agriculture Department report The monthly review of J o food prices aral and marketing cost shifts also showed farm returns for food in the typical basket dropped dr ped 28 per cent in October But most of this decline was was swallowed up by a 18 16 1 per cent increase in the to retail price spread covering costs and pro pro- profits profits fits fils for food processors and retailers The Thi drop in bread prices the department said saki was due entirely to narrower processing and marketing margins which were down 1 15 5 per cent from a month earlier and 38 per cent from a year earlier The farm value of wheat aral and other ingredients in bread boomed by massive wheat sales to Russia rose 24 per percent percent percent cent in October to a record 42 cents a pound
