Soap JL Called Unsafe Ill III FDA WASHINGTON tUPI l The Food lend ind Drug Administration FDA warned Monday against bathing with products containing 3 per cent or more of hexachlorophene on grounds the wide wide- widely widely widely ly used soap ingredient may cause brain damage The warning naming mailed to doctors and re reo required required on product labels libels was w is based on new scientific data casting doubt on both the safety and effectiveness of a product used for years year in m homes and hospitals to bathe babies cleanse wounds and ind burns and treat various skin and scalp ailments A spokesman for Winthrop Laboratories a division of Sterling Drug Inc Ine manufacturer oT of a leading hexachlorophene product took issue with the FDA ruling In In more mort than 20 years of use and ind tens lens of millions of cases there has never been a s single report of harm from when used as directed the spokesman said Th The FDA however said Us its decision was based largely on a I nf new w study by Winthrop Laboratories in which newborn monkeys were werle bathed daily for 90 10 days with solutions con taming 3 1 per cent hexachlorophene the the same percentage that is in The Th monkeys showed measurable amounts of hexachlorophene ne in their blood and brain le- le lesIOns leion ion the FDA said The FDA also cited two other studies in in in- including eluding one in m which 50 newborn babies were bathed daily with 3 per cent hexachlorophene solutions and showed measurable hex he hexachlorophene blood levels but no no obvious tox tov toxic ic symptoms The warning label to be published in m the Federal Register Wednesday would require this notice on products containing 3 5 per p r cent or more hexachlorophene Warning Do not use U for total body bathing Rinse thoroughly after use Hexachlorophene is used in thousands o of soaps deodorants vaginal douches re hygiene deodorants and skin creams cl The FDA action was limited to relatively few such pro pre products products ducts since most hexachlorophene products contain much less than 3 per cent of the chemical But the FDA indicated it may move mo e later against other hexachlorophene products either on grounds of safety or on the basis of evidence that the products fail to deliver on claims
