Pamphlet Stirs Stars Tenant Dispute A page four-page pamphlet on tenant associations being distributed by the Columbia lumbia C Chamber of Commerce nerce was called irresponsible and ex ex- extremely extremely harmful to tenant landlord-tenant relations Monday by Boone County Tenants Inc The pamphlet entitled Tenant Union Parasites is available in the reception room of the chamber clamber offices It is written by Anthony Harrigan for the Southern States Industrial Council of Nashville Tenn The average citizen who rents a house or apartment expects to pay his rent each month but not members of so-called so tenant unions the pamphlet says Their new slogan is apartments are for living not for profits They want free shelter at landlord expense The pamphlet continues Our country cant can't afford to carry a growing population of dead dead- deadbeats deadbeats deadbeats beats organized in tenant unions or cr welfare rights unions These organizations which aim at the victimization of productive individuals and companies should be accorded the scorn and contempt they deserve The tenants unions must be DC held up to the public as prime examples exam exam- examples examples ples of arrogant demanding parasitism George Ogden executive vice president of the Chamber of Commerce said he was not aware the pamphlet was being distributed through his office Theres no place in m that pamphlet that tat says its it's published or endorsed by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce he said The pamphlet has not been widely distributed he said The pamphlets have probably been in inthe inthe inthe the office since July he said Its only for interested people Were We're not twisting peoples' peoples arms to take them The chamber itself has no policies for or against the tenants union union Our efforts have been toward building budding relations between the tenants and the landlords he said The tenants union said it and aId other tenant organizations exist primarily to protect the existing legal rights of tenants through education and to promote housing situations which are beneficial to both landlords and tenants Free housing has bas never been the goal of these organizations the group said said it had attempted to work with the Chamber clamber of Commerce to correct carrett landlord- landlord tenant problems but the Chamber Ch of Com Corn Commerce Commerce merce has chosen to align with the land land- landlords landlords lords under the guise or 01 neutrality n toe tenants organization charged The distribution nn af of this pamphlet is another example of its failure to meet its responsibilities in this area Ogden said sai he had not talked to any representatives of the tenants organization organisation at any time tune They haven't been trying tying to work with us he said
