m Early Scores Scorers Carry A x wB Rockhurst to Title By Richard Parrish Sports Writer INDEPENDENCE INDEPENDENCE- This INDEPENDENCE This game isn't over yet yet The Beaumont aumont football fan who said this at atthe atthe the half of the state championship game Saturday at All AU School Stadium had good reason to feel so He had just left the Beaumont locker room roam where coach Bob reportedly reputedly had given his squad a motivating halftime lec lecture lee lee- ture tore on the evils of o trailing Kansas City Rockhurst 20 But the coach's rhetoric was not enough to help his team overcome a point 13 halftime deficit and its own mistakes as Rockhurst won the state championship 20 2014 14 However it looked for a time like the Blue Jackets would make mate their state cross trip worthwhile They came on the field in the second half with an extra degree of enthusiasm Beaumont held the to a minus 4 yards on their first possession in the period But the Blue mue Jackets had a similar problem with their own offense They bey could only arly move the ball one cue yard before having to punt It was then that Beaumont got the break it apparently needed After three incomplete Rockhurst passes the were forced to punt from their own 33 However Blue BlueJacket BlueJacket BlueJacket Jacket Warren Harris maneuvered his pounds in front of punter Bill to block the kick Beaumont then moved 32 yards in seven plays with Jomel Janel Williams scoring from 5 yards That cut the lead to 20 2014 14 Rockhurst seemed willing at that point to give the Blue Jackets some extra help After failing once again to make a first down center Brian Meyers snapped the ball over ever Davics bead head and the recovered on Rock Rockhurst's 22 Beaumont moved the ball to the 13 but on third down Andre Terrell's Terrells pass was in in- intercepted int intercepted i t by guard Sean Mulcahy But the were not ready to let it go goat goat goat at that mat After advancing the ball to Beaumont's 33 was again called upon to punt The snap was good but the ever ever- overeager eager Harris bulled his Ms way in front of the punter to ID block the kick again D. D Beaumont unappreciative of the hospitality could only move 3 yards before punting the ball bail back The gave Beaumont one more chance With three minutes left in the game quarterback Chris Cummings threw a perfect strike into the arms of defender Anthony Ledbetter Then the 97 37 sprinter must have been thinking th about the open field fieldin fieldin fieldin in front of him because he be dropped the ball The Blue Jackets felt some obligations themselves after being designated as the home borne team They helped the to one TD in the first half and gave them a few other golden opportunities Joel Patrick fumbled the ball on his first carry of the game gam giving Rockhurst the ball ballon ballon ballon on its opponents opponent's yard 20 line But the couldn't advance beyond the 17 17 where missed a yard 34 field goal Patrick then showed everyone just how bow easily it could be done On Beaumont's first play after the missed field goal Patrick ran tackle off-tackle and just kept running 80 running 80 yards past everyone for six sic points The extra point the Blue Jackets lead the gave a 7 0 7 as crowd sat in stunned amazement On the next Beaumont possession Williams ran for two touchdowns but both were called back by penalties The first a yard 34 run nut was nullified by a Beaumont player having jumped offside The second a yard 31 score was called back due to a clip It was then that Rockhurst displayed some explosiveness of its own It moved 80 yards in six plays scoring on a yard 57 pass from Cummings to halfback Fred The snap for the extra point was fumbled and could have been a big point was missed But in the second quarter Gary DiGiovanna ran 60 yards on a trap play to put the ahead And with left in the period Mayers blocked a Beaumont punt to give Rockhurst the ball on the Blue Jackets' Jackets 3 yard line Cummings scored on a keeper to give the their winning tally That blocked punt took the heart out of them said after the game But dont don't play down Rockhurst They bey can play with anybody As should be the case with a state cham cham- championship championship championship club
