Take Time to Be Thankful It is Thanksgiving Day 1971 19 I. I and Columbians are preparing to to celebrate a day of thanksgiving with citizens all over the United States and Canada Americans have observed Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of November since 1941 when Congress Co gress declared this day a national public holiday Thanksgiving Day usually brings to mind thoughts of family reunions bountiful dinners of wild turkey and pumpkin pie and festivities in the home But what else does it signify To the early colonists Thanksgiving ing Day represented a day of religious observance set aside to give thanks for good harvests and victories over ver the Indians To many Americans however Thanksgiving Day represents only a day of football and colorful parades on television Millions lillions of Americans spend the day glued to the TV with turkey and sweet potatoes steaming nearby on a TV tray and with little thought to the fortunes that have come their way over the year Pause for a few minutes in the ac activities activities ac- ac activities today draw your family around you and give thanks for your blessings Thanksgiving Day is for forgiving forgiving forgiving giving thanks
