Julie Abrams Requests Privacy as Generals General's Wife BANGKOK UPI Mrs Creighton W W. Abrams wife of the U US U.S. S commander in Viet Viet- Vietnam Vietnam nam mm lives like thousands of other wives wives whose husbands are serving in Indochina She remains quietly in Thailand engages in voluntary work andl andi waits for the war to end Although she is the ranking U US U.S. S military wife in Ji Southeast Asia Julie Abrams guards her privacy with such skill stall that most Americans and Thais are unaware that she exists Her husband shields her further by not even listing his family fan ly in his official military biography It Its s just that he has a jib jab j to todo todo todo do and our job is to help him and nd theres there's s no reason for anyone to know about us she said in a recent interview A veteran military wife wile who has hoS been married to Abe for 35 years she is distressed that the military has come under so much criticism in recent years heightened by the War WarNo WarNo WarNo No one wants war she said Ive I've never met anyone in inthe inthe inthe the military who wanted war But I believe it is an honorable thing to serve one ones one's s country and to do the best possible job of it it If If I r have any advice for wives of young soldiers it is to tobe tobe tobe be proud of what your husband is doing become active in the community in in which you ou live Le and make the best of whatever situation you are in in She says she mixes with the wives of the men under her husbands husband's s command but they avoid controversial subjects such as the war What hat good does it do to debate it she asks Mrs Abrams a blonde gracious woman in her mid with six children and nine grandchildren keeps very active in the American Red RedCross RedCross RedCross Cross in Bangkok and helping to raise money for Thai schools She visits Saigon frequently whenever 1 Im I'm m asked flying by bj military plane to stay at her husbands husband's s modest villa or a trailer he maintains at the Vietnamese Tanson Nhut base baseA A native nati of Massachusetts Mrs Abrams met the general in 1934 when he was in his second year at West Point and she was attending Vassar College We e met let on a blind bund tennis date she said We played a game of tennis and he was terrible I beat him I m. m She says he has since become a good player They were married when they graduated from college
