F Kennedy broke the Catholic anti barrier to the White House How far should s the church move toward an active role in our political affairs Inthe In Inthe Inthe the past there t re have been incidents when the leaders in a totalitarian state sought to control the church Hitler and Stalin are examples In recalling his early years in Nazi Germany I Albert Einstein wrote I never had any special interest in the church before but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the church alone had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom JESUS BELIEVED that Rome should be paid taxes for the services it provided the people People should pay tribute to Jesus for life the fruitful seasons and the blessedness of a new life in hi the Kingdom Where When the state becomes unjust materialistic militaristic and irresponsible irresponsible irresponsible sible the church should step in and act As Christians we are obligated to become more informed dedicated and vocal about our government When we react as Christians should our ow government govern govern- government government ment will be better On the other hand we are ere not true Christians if we become subservient and complacent If we become members of the silent majority we fail faU to act as God wants His followers to act Christians are expected to live as citizens of earth and aM of Heaven setting godly examples for all aU to follow fo OW Un Un- Unfortunately Unfortunately Unfortunately fortunately our young people are upset over the double standards of conduct for lor children hildren cl and adults AND SOME PERSONS fear we Americans have grown soft and have bave lost our desire to resist those who would destroy Christianity Too often we take the easy way We must recognize that we live in a pluralistic society The rights and feelings of all people must be considered We must avoid rumors or hearsay stories We must not insist that everyone believe and act as we do The church and the state must co co- cooperate operate They can in childcare child cb care d-care centers cost tow low st housing projects nursing and retirement homes hospitals schools etc The state can guarantee peaceful assembly and assure us police and fire protection And both can work to make the world worth saving Neither should stamp rubber the actions of the other What is Gods God's and what is Ceasar's is impossible to answer with a simple yes or no It requires thoughtful study
