Popularity in the Polls Soars Changes Image And Its It's Working By JAMES MARLOW AP News Analyst WASHINGTON AP API President President dent Johnsons Johnson's stock is going up Theres There's not much doubt he will run again in 1968 His popularity popularity popularity larity in the public opinion polls soared after his bis summit meet meet- meeting meeting ing with Soviet Premier Alexei N. N and the way he tried to cool the Middle East crisis Although he be didn't say much Since he is a master politician politician politician cian nothing could help him more than a 1968 summit meeting meet meet- meeting meeting ing with three or four heads of state including the Soviet Un Un- Union Union Union ion or the beginning of negotiations negotiations negotiations to end the war It should be no surprise if either ei ei- either either ther happens One big difference between Democrats and Republicans right now is that hat the Republicans cans dont don't have any idea who their presidential candidate will be The Democrats dont don't seem to have bave any uncertainty about it But that isn't the only differ differ- difference difference ence as last week wee showed Republican governors met and be be- believing believing believing discussed went home lieving it was too early for them to endorse any candidate Dem Dem- Democratic Democratic governors met and gave Johnson a hearty cheer It was music to my ears he said The Democratic governors meeting at St. St Louis rouis where Johnson joined them issued a statement praising the Presidents President's Presidents President's dents dent's courageous efforts to obtain peace abroad and civil obedience at home They didn't specifically say they wanted him to run ran again some Southerners resisted resl ted getting In line this t l early But Butone Butone Butone one governor Missouri's War War- Warren ran feD E. E said Im not so naive as to feel Mr Johnson will not nm be the nomi- nomi nom Hearnes Heames wasn't so mild on the subject of Johnson last Decem Decem- December December December ber when he said unless Johnson changed some policies and re- re reevaluated reevaluated reevaluated evaluated the political situation the Democrats might well start all over with a new can can- candidate candidate candidate in 1968 But then last year wasn't Johnsons Johnson's good year with the Democratic governors g who met metat metat metat at White Sulphur Springs W. W Va after the 1966 elections in which Democrats took a club club- clubbing clubbing clubbing bing suffering a net loss of 47 House seats 3 Senate seats and 8 governorships i S i P Johnson had taken little part partin in the election campaigning And in the midst of the cam cam- campaign campaign campaign he went off to Manila for fora a conference on the Vietnamese war Besides his standing in the popularity polls was way down then At White Sulphur Springs the Democratic governors frankly and it seemed bitterly con condemned the Johnson adminis adminis- for the party's election losses Josses which they blamed on an anti administration vote Nevertheless even then most of the governors were say say- saying saying saying ing Johnson would run again next year and win Nine of them subsequently journeyed to the White House to complain to Johnson about the way he han han- handled handled died them or rather ignored them But the full story of something else which happened between the fall fail of 1968 1966 and now has nev nev- never never er been revealed Johnson in that time apparently went to work on the job of changing his public image Since then his public state state- statements statements statements ments have been low keyed and so have his mannerisms which had irritated a lot of people He Re kept to this formula even after his meeting with He was enthusiastic about it but didn't overdo over Q it i S t i I This was his first big bid for public approval since 1964 and the results must have been as as- assuring assuring suring swing to him The Harris public opinion poll over the weekend said his popularity had shot up 11 points over last May At that time the poll showed only 47 per cent of those quizzed approved the way he handled his job while 53 per cent Now the rating is 58 approving 42 not The Harris people said this is a bigger increase in pub pub- public public public lic approval than ever recorded for President John F. F Kennedy
