Card Reliever Recalls Illness Weakened Heart Muscles Nearly Finished Hoerner ern e By Hy SANDY NEW YORK It was ding a pleasant summer evening in iD Burlington Iowa nine years ago and Joe Hoerner had just sprinted off oft the pitchers pitcher's mound to field the bunt rolling down the i first base line r I remember going for or the ball the St St. Louis Cardinals said and then I collapsed At the hospital the 1 first diagnosis was a heart at at- tack trick 4 ice lec Koerner was 21 then a af f pitcher for Davenport Iowa the White hita Sox farm team in the Class B III Ill League It seemed a shame that a prom promising ising career had to end so quick quickly quickly ly 17 and so tragically During Daring the be winter Joe JM en e. fiend the fee University cf of lawn Iowa Medical B Center for farther further ex ax- examination and treatment He Hebald old laid the doctors how MW be he had h d been short abort of breath how hew 4 be experienced a quickened P i 1 itY heart bee beat t tY t. t They examined the young yeung pitcher pitch er ex- took some tests and told him his trouble had been caused by weakened muscles around the heart They told me that pitching aggravated x the weak muscles x Je Jc Jes said acid I 1 had bed the tiro regular ov 0 erhand motion I didn't realize real it was causing the trouble but it was especially when I threw a curve ball ban They gave ga me medication and by the spring of lof 1959 I felt strong enough to try and pitch again The doctors said all an right But this time Joe had switched his pitching motion from over over- overhand overhand overhand hand to sidearm to reduce the strain on the weak muscles He I still has the th sidearm motion and basically uses wes two pitches the fast ball and slider I didn't pitch much that year Joe said I still didn't feel right But by the follow fellow following ing big season I felt fel mans strong er I guess it was the fits medics metika- mt ties rest and bd tin change to m style tyle Once in a while during the 1960 season spent with Charles Charles- Charleston ton of the Sally League 1 J had a ar I recurrence r but it wasn't any any- anything anything anything thing serious I would just be short of breath or have a little rapid heart beat Since then though I haven't had any big problems problems- Only small problems problems like like get getting get I ting to the major leagues Hoerner Koerner never made it to Co- Co Comiskey Comiskey Park with the White Sox but he did have two brief trials with the Houston Astros consisting consist consist- ing fag of eight games Last winter the St St. Louis Car Car- Cardinals Cardinals drafted him h n and from the beginning manager Red dienst gave him a chance I bare lure a good sprit spring Joe Joo saM i Hid fait Red oed coed me sa asai asal ho lee hilt baa been using usia me since The reason is obvious Joe Hoarser Hoerner has become the Cardi Cardi- Cardinals Cardinal's Cardinals Cardinal's Cardinals Cardinal's nals nal's most effective relief pitch pitch- er Nine years ago Las Laa Vegas wouldn't have handled thone adds
