Portrait of i Red China III Ch Ia III Shanghai Streets St ees With Varied Surprises a By Feliks Third in ia a Series SHANGHAI N E A The Shanghai Childrens Children's Palace P a l I ace a c e boasted an amusement arcade with a difference Here instead of shooting at clay pipes or ducks school children aimed at cutouts of American planes If you scored a eye bulls you brought down a bomber over Viet Nam Similarly by pulling a rope the tiniest toddler could hang Lyndon B. B Johnson in effigy Shanghais Shanghai's streets were full of off surprises Costumes have col color col- col color or variety and 2nd even elegance despite reports that the Chinese all wear the same drab blue uniforms In China as elsewhere I was impressed by the dignity and goodness of the simple people The Tile trouble was that middle middle- middlemen middlemen middlemen men interpreters officials guides were constantly get get- getting getting ting in the way of the observer This led l d to misunderstand misunderstand- misunderstandings ings clashes of M temperament comic cornie situations in which one had bad to guard against forming opinions based on smugness or ora ora ora a superior frame of mind They held me to rigid time time- timetables timetables timetables tables though I kept wanting to stop and ADd sketch things of in in- interest terest along the way The re re- result suIt sult was WIlS that I IVas was Vas seldom on 00 time for appointments and nd the managers of factories and of peoples people's communes were kept waiting watches in hand band to welcome me Or take the Chinese habit of applauding whenever they see seea seea seea a foreigner This Ti 3 too could be ba annoying if you were an artist and had a drawing pencil in your hand band as I did most of the time For you were expected to clap back That was part of the ritual In for example I Iwas Iwas Iwas was applauded at each way sta sta- station station tion lion as I toiled my way up steep flights of steps to the top of the Sun sen Yat-sen memorial Every child I passed on my way up clapped me What originally was spontaneous became an irk irk- irksome irksome some game Similarly at the Shanghai Childrens Children's Palace my free hand was seized by a little girl aged 10 or 12 who wore the red scarf of a young Communist pioneer and who was to serve as my mv guide In response to her in insistent in- in insistent tugging I explained that I needed both my hands free to draw But wherever I went in the Childrens Children's Palace I was ap applauded in the engineering workshops the classrooms where lessons in song ong and dance in model aircraft build build- building building building ing were in progress The clapping routine was not only wasteful of the childrens children's time but it also meant that they were on permanent show for there was a steady stream of foreign visitors to the Chil Chil- Children's Childrens Childrens Children's drens dren's Palace The applause ritual is also subtly corrupting to the It lumps ordinary tourists with official delegates The number of foreigners vis visiting China incidentally was as s I first became aware of this when our train stopped en route to Peking and the tour tour- tourists tourists piled out their cameras at atthe atthe atthe the ready to snap the Great Wall of China African visitors in particular stand out The Chinese need for fOT approval al ai for friends is so strong it itis itis is almost tangible and it ex ex- explains explains ex- ex explains plains the rapturous receptions according to delegations from tiny Albania for example There were several dinners in my honor usually given by artists at a hotel or restaurant and I welcomed these diversions as they offered new faces and situations to draw The semi-official semi lunch or dinner usually started off rather stiffly in an anteroom with ev ev- everyone everyone everyone sitting Bitting in a straight line Hot towels and little bowls o of green tea lea were brought after which we went in to dinner Official dinners are constant constant- constantly ly interrupted by toasts drunk in spiced vodka or wine Tea and beer are also served The Chinese make an excellent ex c e 11 en t lager In Ice my hosts took it into their heads to play the gay dogs and try to drink me under the table taMe It was all cep very silly as the wine we were drinking was notably weak but it set up lip an echo Suddenly remembered Ire m e m b ere d where I had encountered this before It was in Russia which I first visited during the war Stalin was then in his heyday and it was the fashion to drink foreign vis- vis visitors visitors particularly Westerners under the table
